Activating DigiD from abroad

If you are currently living abroad or in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, you can activate your DigiD. You will need an activation code to do this. There are two ways to activate a DigiD: via the DigiD website or the DigiD app.

Attention: If you do not yet have a DigiD activation code, first find out how to collect one.

  1. Go to https://digid.nl/en/activeren
  2. Enter your username and password, which you set when you applied for a DigiD. If you do not yet have a DigiD username and password, or have forgotten them, first find out how to apply for a new DigiD.
  3. Click ‘Log in’.
  4. If you have chosen text message (SMS) verification, you will receive a text message to the number you gave when you applied for your DigiD.
  5. Fill in the code you received in the text message (it usually fills itself in automatically).
  6. Click ‘Next’.
  7. Enter the activation code. If you do not yet have a DigiD activation code, first find out how to receive one.
  8. Click ‘Activate’.
  9. You can now log in to DigiD using your username and password and a code sent to you by text message. Find out how to log in via the DigiD website with SMS verification.
Attention: The activation code is valid for 21 days. If you applied for a DigiD via the Social Insurance Bank (SVB), the activation code is valid for 45 days. Be sure to activate your DigiD within this period. If you don’t, you will have to apply again for a DigiD and collect a new activation code.

Also activate the DigiD app

After activating your DigiD via the DigiD website, you can also activate the DigiD app on your phone or tablet. The DigiD app is the easiest way to log in securely. Instead of logging in with your username and password, you use a self-selected PIN.

Find out how to activate the DigiD app

Attention: The advantage of using the app is that you can activate your DigiD and the DigiD app at the same time.
  1. Download the DigiD app.
  2. Open the DigiD app and click ‘Next’.
  3. Fill in your username and the password you set when you applied for your DigiD and click ‘Next’. If you do not yet have a DigiD username and password, or have forgotten them, first find out how to apply for a new DigiD.
  4. You will receive a text message (SMS) on the number you gave when you applied for your DigiD.
  5. Fill in the code you received in the text message (it usually fills itself in automatically).
  6. Click ‘Next’.
  7. Enter the activation code. If you do not yet have a DigiD activation code, first find out how to receive one.
  8. Choose a PIN, then repeat the PIN to confirm it.
  9. Your DigiD and the DigiD app are now activated.
  10. You can now log in with the DigiD app using a PIN. Depending on the type of phone you have, you may be able to log in using facial recognition or your fingerprint. Find out how to log in via the DigiD app.
Attention: The activation code is valid for 21 days. If you applied for a DigiD via the Social Insurance Bank (SVB), the activation code is valid for 45 days. Add the ID check to the DigiD app

After you activate your DigiD via the DigiD app, you can add the ID check to the DigiD app. You will need a suitable Dutch identity document to do this. After you add the ID check to the DigiD app, you can log in to any organisation that uses DigiD login.
