Logging in with DigiD from abroad using text message (SMS) verification

If you are currently living abroad or in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, find out how to log in with DigiD using SMS verification and what to do if it doesn’t work.

How do I log in?

To log in with DigiD using SMS verification, do the following:

  1. Go to the website or the app of the organisation you want to log in to.
  2. Click ‘Log in with DigiD’.
  3. Click ‘With an SMS verification code’
  4. Enter your DigiD username and password, and click ‘Next’.
  5. A 6-figure verification code will be sent to your phone by SMS.
  6. Fill in the 6-figure verification code and click ‘Next’.
  7. You now are logged in.

Check whether your telephone number is linked to your DigiD

You can only receive the SMS code if your telephone number is linked to your DigiD and SMS verification is activated. You can check your telephone number when logging in. The login screen will show the last 3 numbers of the telephone number to which the SMS code was sent.

If your telephone number has changed, you can update your number in the DigiD app or by having an SMS sent to your old mobile telephone number.

Check whether the SMS code can be received in the country you are in

Not all foreign telephone subscriptions allow you to receive SMS messages from the Netherlands. So check with your provider.

DigiD cannot send SMS codes to the following countries because of local legislation:

  • Philippines
  • Qatar
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates
  • Vietnam

If you cannot receive SMS messages, or don’t have a mobile telephone, you can choose to receive SMS messages as spoken messages on your mobile phone or landline. Find out below how to set this up.

If you cannot receive SMS messages, or don’t have a mobile telephone, you can choose to receive spoken messages via your mobile phone or landline.

Follow these steps to set this up:

  1. Go to DigiD.nl.
  2. Click ‘My DigiD’ and log in with the DigiD app
  3. Under ‘With username and password’, click ‘More details’
  4. Click ‘Activate spoken messages’ 
  5. Select ‘I want to receive spoken SMS messages’ and click ‘Save’.

You will now receive SMS codes as spoken messages to your telephone.

You can only add SMS verification to your DigiD if you have activated the DigiD app. Select the situation that applies to you:

If you have activated the DigiD app

Follow these steps

  1. Open your DigiD app.
  2. Enter your PIN.
  3. Tap the menu icon (top left).
  4. Tap ‘My DigiD’. 
  5. Tap ‘To My DigiD’ (under ‘Other data’).
  6. Tap ‘Confirm’.
  7. Under ‘Login methods’, tap ‘Using Username and password’
  8. Tap ‘Activate SMS verification’
  9. Tap ‘Directly via the DigiD app’
  10. Follow the steps in the DigiD app.

If you have not activated the DigiD app

If you have not yet activated the DigiD app, you cannot add SMS verification to your DigiD. You will need to apply for a new DigiD. Your telephone number will be linked to your new DigiD, so you can use SMS verification.
