Adding SMS verification to DigiD from outside the Netherlands

Language selection:English

If you have activated your DigiD app you can add SMS verification to your DigiD from outside the Netherlands. If you have not done this, you will need to apply for a new DigiD and add SMS verification immediately.

When you log in to Mijn DigiD you will be given the option of adding SMS verification to your account. If you live abroad and do not have the DigiD app, this will not be possible. This is because the letter containing the code to activate SMS verification can only be sent to a residential address in the Netherlands.

Applying for a new DigiD with SMS verification

If you apply for a new DigiD from outside the Netherlands, you must add your telephone number. This will allow you to use SMS verification. You will need to go to a DigiD collection point to activate your new DigiD.

How do I apply for DigiD from abroad?

Adding SMS verification via the DigiD app

If you have activated the DigiD app you can add SMS verification using Mijn DigiD. Follow these instructions:

  1. Open your DigiD app.
  2. Enter your PIN.
  3. Tap the menu icon (top left).
  4. Tap ‘My DigiD’.
  5. Tap ‘To My DigiD’ (under ‘Other data’).
  6. Tap ‘Confirm’.
  7. Under ‘Login methods’, tap ‘Using Username and password’
  8. Tap ‘Activate SMS verification’
  9. Tap ‘Directly via the DigiD app’

Follow the steps in the DigiD app.

SMS verification means you can always log in with extra protection, even if you can’t access the app (due to a poor network connection, for example).

Receiving SMS text messages outside the Netherlands

Not all foreign telephone subscriptions allow you to receive SMS messages from the Netherlands. So check with your provider.

If you cannot receive SMS messages or do not have a mobile telephone, you can choose to receive SMS messages as spoken messages on your landline.
