What do I need to consider when applying for a Dutch passport or ID card abroad?
If you live abroad and want to apply for a Dutch passport or ID card, you’ll need to prepare more than if you lived in the Netherlands. There are often more steps involved, and it might not always be possible to get an appointment straight away. So it’s important to get started in good time and prepare well. That will help you receive your passport or ID card faster.
Start in good time
It’s important to start preparing in good time, so you receive your new passport or ID before your current one expires.
Useful to know:
- You don’t need to wait until your current passport or ID expires to apply for a new one. If possible, apply 6 months before your current document expires.
- If you live abroad, each time you apply for a Dutch passport or ID card, checks must be carried out to verify you hold Dutch nationality. As you are not registered with a Dutch municipality, you will need to provide additional documentation. This takes extra time.
- Gathering this documentation and, if needed, having it legalised can be a lengthy process. So check carefully what you need and start gathering your documentation in good time.

Prepare well
Your application will go more smoothly if you prepare well. Think about the following:
- When you apply abroad, there are fewer application locations. Be aware that you’ll need time to travel to the application location. You might even need to plan to spend a night nearby if you have to travel from far away.
- Sometimes you may have to wait a while for your appointment. Slots often fill up quickly. So book your appointment in good time.
- It usually takes 4 weeks until your passport or ID card is ready. You can collect your passport or ID card or have it sent to you. Please note: not every application location can send you document to you.
