Where can I apply for a Dutch passport of ID-card, if I live outside the Netherlands

You can apply for a Dutch passport or ID-card in the Netherlands or abroad. In the Netherlands you can apply at a border municipality. Outside the Netherlands you can apply at a Dutch embassy or at a application centre of VFS Global.

Attention: Applying for a Dutch passport or ID card abroad often takes more time than you might expect. There are often more steps involved, and it might not always be possible to get an appointment straight away. Your application will go more smoothly if you prepare well.

Netherlands

If you live outside the Netherlands and will be visiting the Netherlands for a family visit or holiday in the near future, you can apply for a Dutch passport or ID-card when you are in the Netherlands. You can do this at a border municipality.

A Dutch border municipality is a municipality that, in most cases, is situated on a border with another country. You can apply to one of these municipalities for a Dutch passport or ID-card when you are in the Netherlands. You can also apply at Schiphol airport. This application location is part of Haarlemmermeer municipality.

Abroad

If you live outside the Netherlands and will not be visiting the Netherlands for a family visit or holiday in the near future, you can apply for a Dutch passport or ID-card from abroad. You can apply from abroad via a Dutch embassy or consulate-general. Or you can apply at a application location of VFS Global. You do not have to apply for your passport or identity card in the country where you live. You can also submit an application in another country, for example a neighbouring country.

Is there no Dutch embassy or consulate-general near you? And is there no VFS Global location either? Embassy or consulate-general staff sometimes visit other regions. You can apply for a passport or identity card there.
