How long does it take to apply for a Dutch passport or ID card abroad?
Applying for a Dutch passport or ID card abroad takes longer than in the Netherlands. We cannot say exactly how long it will take. Start your application at least 6 months in advance. You do not have to wait until your passport is about to expire.
No guarantee you will have it within 4 weeks
The standard processing time is 4 weeks. This does not mean that you will also be able to collect your passport or ID card within 4 weeks. Please keep in mind that it may take longer before you can collect or receive your passport or ID card.
Why it takes longer
Applying for a passport or ID card abroad always takes longer, because your new passport is sent from the Netherlands to the country where you are applying.
Your passport application may also take longer because:
- demand is higher than usual because many Dutch passports are now expiring
- you need to provide or legalise additional documents
- your personal situation requires additional checks
- the embassy still needs to send your passport to your home address
It is less busy between November and March
Between November and March, applying for a passport usually takes less time than during the high season. It is less busy then. Do you not need your passport straight away? Preferably apply between November and March.
Preparing and making an appointment
You need to collect documents for your new passport application. This also applies if you already have a passport.
Select your country and create a personal checklist in Step 1 for all the documents you need. Then make an appointment online. You cannot do this by phone.
Are there no appointments available? Try again later. New appointment slots may become available.
Already applied
Have you already applied for a passport? You will be notified as soon as your passport is ready for collection. Until then, we cannot give you any additional information about the status of your application. Thank you for your understanding.
