How much AOW pension will I receive if I live outside the Netherlands?

How much AOW pension you receive if you live outside the Netherlands depends on your situation, for instance on how long you lived and worked in the Netherlands. If you have not always lived and worked in the Netherlands, you will probably not have built up a full AOW pension.

What affects the amount of AOW pension I receive?

  • How much AOW pension you built up in the Netherlands
  • Which country you live in
  • Your domestic situation: do you live alone or with a partner?
  • Whether you are married or have a registered partner
  • Whether your AOW pension includes a tax credit
  • Whether you have to pay health insurance contributions
  • Whether you were voluntarily insured under the AOW pension scheme

If there are any changes in your personal situation, you must report them to the SVB.

AOW pension amounts

The maximum amounts of the AOW pension can be found on the SVB’s website. The amounts shown are adjusted every six months and are paid to people who have built up a full AOW pension.

Tax credit on your AOW pension

The SVB withholds salaries tax and national insurance contributions from your AOW pension. As you do not have to pay tax and contributions on all your income, you are entitled to a tax credit. This means you pay less in tax and contributions.

The tax credit will be automatically added to your AOW pension. If you do not want it to be added, you can say so when you apply for your AOW pension. You can always change your mind later in My SVB.

Health insurance contributions

The CAK decides whether you have to pay health insurance contributions. If you do, the SVB will withhold foreign health insurance contributions from your AOW pension.
