Do I need an apostille?

Language selection:English

Whether you need an apostille depends on the type of document and the country you want to use it in. In some cases your document may need to be legalised in a different way. Within the European Union (EU) many documents do not need to be legalised.

Using a Dutch document abroad

In many cases you can use a Dutch document in another EU country without needing an apostille or any other form of legalisation. For other countries whether you need an apostille depends on the type of document and the country.

Using a foreign document in the Netherlands

In most cases you can use a document from another EU country in the Netherlands without needing an apostille or any other form of legalisation. For documents from other countries you may need to have your document legalised with an apostille or in another way. This depends on the type of document and the country it was issued in.

Apostilles are never issued for trade documents or documents issued by the customs authorities or an embassy. Contact the authorities in the country where the document was issued. They can explain how to have the document legalised for use in the Netherlands.
