How do I apply to become a naturalised Dutch citizen abroad?

If you meet the conditions to become a naturalised Dutch citizen abroad, you can submit your application at the Dutch embassy or consulate general in the country where you live.

How does naturalisation work?

  1. Take the naturalisation test.
  2. Make sure you have the required documents.
  3. Make an appointment at a Dutch embassy or consulate general.
  4. Take your documents to the Dutch embassy or consulate general.
  5. Submit your application there.
  6. Pay the naturalisation fee.
  7. The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) assesses your application. This can take up to one year.
  8. You receive the result of your application.
  9. If the IND approves your application, you attend a naturalisation ceremony, where you make a declaration of solidarity.

After the ceremony you will be a Dutch citizen.

Objecting the IND's decision

If the IND denies your application, you will receive a letter explaining their decision. The letter will also include information on how to lodge an objection to the IND’s decision.
