Logging in with DigiD from abroad using an identity document

Language selection:English

If you are currently living abroad or in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, find out how to log in with the DigiD app using an identity document and what to do if this doesn’t work. No Dutch organisation currently requires you to log in using this method.

Attention: Logging in with your identity document is not the same as the ID check in the DigiD app. Read more about the ID check in the DigiD app.

How does it work?

To log in with DigiD with your ID, you must first activate your ID. If you live abroad, you can only activate your ID card.

To log in with DigiD with your ID you will need:

  • an activated DigiD app. If you have not yet activated the DigiD app, find out how to activate the DigiD app.
  • An activated ID card, issued on or after 13 March 2021, Read below how to activate your ID card’s login feature.
  • The PIN for your ID card. You will receive this by post when you get a new ID card.
Attention: You cannot apply for a driving licence with login feature if you live abroad. If you received a driving licence with login feature in the Netherlands before you moved abroad you can continue using it.

You will also need:

  • An Android phone or tablet with an NFC reader (OS 7.0 or later)
  • An iPhone 7 or later (iOS 12.2 or later)

You have to activate your identity document before you can log in with it. Follow these instructions.

  • After you have collected your new ID card you will receive a letter from DigiD with a PIN.
  • Go to My DigiD (information in Dutch) and activate your ID card's login feature using the PIN. You do not have to do this within a certain window of time.
  • Change the temporary PIN to a self-selected PIN.

Correspondence address

If you apply for your ID card from abroad, you can have the letter with the PIN sent to a correspondence address. You should provide this address when applying for your ID card.
It can be your home or other address abroad, or an address in the Netherlands. The letter will not be sent to the Dutch embassy, consulate-general or VFS Global.

If you have activated your identity document’s login feature, there are 2 ways you can log in using it:
