When do I have to deregister from a Dutch municipality?

Are you going to stay outside the Netherlands for more than 8 months in one year? Or are you already doing so? In that case, you should deregister from the municipality in the Netherlands where you live.

More than 8 months outside the Netherlands

Do you stay outside the Netherlands for more than 8 months during a period of one year? In that case, you must always deregister from your municipality in the Netherlands. If you do not do this, you may get a fine.

The 8 months do not have to be consecutive. This also applies, for example, if you are going to live outside the Netherlands for 5 months twice within a period of one year. It does not matter whether you keep your house in the Netherlands.

You will have to deregister in the following situations, for example:

  • You are going to emigrate and you are going to live permanently outside the Netherlands.
  • You are going to live outside the Netherlands for more than 8 months in a year for work, study or a traineeship.
  • You are going to stay at your holiday address abroad for more than 8 months in a year.
  • You are going on a trip (around the world) and you spend more than 8 months in a year abroad.
  • You are detained outside the Netherlands and you expect this to last longer than 8 months.

Leaving for the Caribbean part of the Kingdom

Are you going to stay in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten) for more than 8 months during a period of one year? In that case, you will also have to deregister from your municipality in the Netherlands.
