How can I file an income tax return in the Netherlands if I live abroad?

Even if you live outside the Netherlands you can file an income tax return in the Netherlands. In most cases, you can file a tax return online. In some cases, you have to submit a form, for instance, for the year in which you left the Netherlands.

You must submit your 2020 tax return before 1 July 2021. If this is not possible, you must apply to the Tax and Customs Administration for an extension.

if you live outside the Netherlands in the year for which you want to file a tax return, you cannot use the tax return app.

Filing a tax return online

If you lived outside the Netherlands for the entire year for which you want to file a tax return, you can file the return online. (information in Dutch)

There are three ways to log in:

If you log in with your DigiD or a European eIDAS, you can do more than just file your tax return. You can, for instance, also review previous tax returns and assessments and inform the Tax and Customs Administration of your bank account number.

If you log in with a username and password you can only file a tax return.

Rest assured, the padlock in your address bar or in the bottom right of your browser shows you that Mijn Belastingdienst is a secure environment.

Filing a tax return by C Form if you are a non-resident taxpayer

If you lived outside the Netherlands for the entire year for which you wish to file a tax return and were not posted abroad by the Netherlands as a civil servant, you qualify as a non-resident taxpayer. You can file your tax return either online or by means of a C Form. Each tax year has its own C Form. To request a C Form, contact the Non-residents TaxLine (information in Dutch).

Filing a tax return by P Form if you are a resident taxpayer

If you lived outside the Netherlands for the entire year for which you want to file a tax return and were posted abroad by the Netherlands as a civil servant, you qualify as a resident taxpayer. You can file a tax return either online or by means of a P Form. Each tax year has its own P Form. To request a P Form, contact the Non-residents TaxLine (information in Dutch).

Filing a tax return by M Form if you move house

If you have moved abroad from the Netherlands, you can file a tax return for the year in which you moved only by means of an M Form. Each tax year has its own M Form.

Send a personal income statement with your tax return

If you meet the conditions to use Dutch tax benefits and wish to use them, you must send a personal income statement to the Tax and Customs Administration when you file your tax return.
