Can I get an urgent visa for the Netherlands?

Whether or not you can apply for an urgent visa depends on your situation. Find out below when you can get an emergency visa, and how you can apply.

Who is eligible for an urgent visa?

You might be eligible for an urgent visa if you:

  • are visiting first-degree or second-degree family in the Netherlands because of a death
  • want to visit a first-degree or second-degree family member in the Netherlands who is terminally ill
  • need to undergo necessary medical treatment in the Netherlands

The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) assesses whether you are eligible for an urgent visa. We cannot help you with this.

 The following persons are first-degree or second-degree family:

  • your spouse or registered partner. Or the partner with whom you have a child or a demonstrable relationship
  • your grandparents, parents, child, brother or sister
  • your father-in-law, mother-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, brother-in-law or sister-in-law
  • your step-parents, step-child, step-brother or step-sister

Is an urgent visa for the Netherlands valid in other Schengen countries? 

An urgent visa is only valid for the Netherlands. It does not give you entry to other Schengen countries.

How do I apply for an urgent visa?

You can apply to the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) for an urgent visa. How you do this depends on your nationality. Fill in your nationality on the IND website to get specific advice for your situation.
