Language selection:English

If you want to invite a friend or family member for a visit to the Netherlands lasting no more than 90 days, read the steps below to see what you and your visitor need to do.

Step 1: Check whether your visitor needs a visa

First, check whether your visitor needs a visa for the Netherlands. This depends on their nationality and other factors.

Check whether your visitor needs a visa

  • If your friend or family member needs a visa, they must apply for it themselves. You cannot do it for them. Find out how your visitor can apply for a visa. Your visitor will also need other documents. Continue to step 2.
  • Even if your friend or family member does not need a visa, they will still need other documents. Continue to step 2.

Step 2: Check whether your visitor needs a sponsor

Your visitor must be able to show that they have enough money for their visit. This also applies to visitors under the age of 18. Your visitor must have €55 to spend for each day of their visit.

  • If your visitor has less than €55 for each day, you must show that you can cover their expenses in the Netherlands. This is referred to as sponsorship. Read how you can arrange this. You may also be required to show that you will provide accommodation for your visitor. Continue to step 3.
  • If your visitor has at least €55 for each day, you do not need to show that you can cover their expenses. Sponsorship is not needed in this case. However, you may still be required to show that you will provide accommodation. Continue to step 3.

Step 3: Check whether you need to provide proof of private accommodation

If your visitor will be staying in your home, they must be able to present proof of private accommodation.

  • If your visitor will be staying with you in the Netherlands, read how you can arrange proof of private accommodation. Your visitor will also need other documents. Continue to step 4.
  • If your visitor will not stay in your home but in a hotel, rented accommodation or somewhere else, you don’t need to arrange proof of accommodation. However, your visitor will still need other documents. Continue to step 4.

Step 4: Prepare for your visitor’s trip

When entering the country, your visitor will need to show a number of documents at border control. Which ones they need depends on their situation.
