Travelling with luggage and souvenirs

Are you going away or returning home from abroad? Some goods can’t simply be brought into the country in your luggage.

What items are restricted or forbidden?

Money, weapons, food and some souvenirs, for example. You can find a list of the items to which extra rules apply on the Tax and Customs Administration website.

What you are allowed to import into and export from the Netherlands depends on your situation. Different rules apply when you travel within or outside the European Union (EU).

I'm going away

To an EU country

If you are leaving the Netherlands to travel to an EU country, the Customs website has information on what you can and cannot take with you within the EU. The same rules apply to your return journey.

To a non-EU country

If you are leaving the Netherlands to travel to a non-EU country, the rules of the country you are travelling to will apply. The Customs website has information on the rules for luggage. For example, you will need to tell Customs if you have more than €10,000 with you. There are also rules for carrying medicines with you.

I'm returning home

From an EU country

If you are returning from an EU country to the Netherlands, the Customs website has information on what you can and cannot take with you within the EU. The same rules apply as to your outward journey.

From a non-EU country

If you are returning from a non-EU country to the Netherlands, the Customs website has information on the rules for luggage. For example, souvenirs or counterfeit goods.

Hand luggage on aeroplanes

Special rules apply to hand luggage on aeroplanes (information in Dutch).
