Becoming a Dutch citizen
There are various ways of becoming a Dutch citizen: by birth or acknowledgement, through the option procedure or through naturalisation.
3 ways to become a Dutch citizen
Automatically at birth or through acknowledgement
If you are the child of Dutch parents or you were acknowledged by a Dutch parent, you automatically have Dutch nationality.
The option procedure is a fast and easy way of acquiring Dutch nationality. You can find out if you are eligible for the option procedure on the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) website.
If you are not eligible for the option procedure, you may be able to apply for naturalisation.
Making an appointment at an embassy or consulate
The conditions and procedure for becoming a Dutch citizen are explained on the IND website.
If you think you meet the conditions and you have the required documents, you can make an appointment at a Dutch embassy or consulate in your region.
The IND makes the final decision about whether you get Dutch nationality.
