Applying for a Dutch nationality certificate if you live in the United States

If you are a Dutch national living in the United States you can apply for a Dutch nationality certificate. You must provide a number of documents with your application. The documents you need depend on your personal situation.

If you are living in the American Virgin Islands, the Bahama's, the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico or the Turks and Caicos Islands and you want to apply for a Dutch nationality certificate, the information on this page is also relevant for you.

Warning: From Tuesday, April 12, 2022, you cannot apply for a Dutch nationality certificate until further notice. You can apply for a Dutch passport or ID card. All applications submitted before April 12 will be processed according to the regular procedure.

You might need a certificate of Dutch nationality to prove that you are a Dutch national or to keep your Dutch nationality. If you are applying for a certificate to keep your Dutch nationality, you must have received the certificate within 13 years of the date of issue of your Dutch passport, ID card or a previous certificate of Dutch nationality. A new 13-year period starts on the day you receive the certificate.

Attention:

The period changed from 10 to 13 years on April 1, 2022. Did the 10-year period expire before April 1, 2022? Then you do not fall under the term of 13 years and you will have lost your Dutch nationality.

Step 1: Create a personal checklist

When you apply for a Dutch nationality certificate, it is important that you provide the right documents. So you should first fill in the personal checklist for you or your child. Then you’ll know what documents you need.

Attention:

In Step 2, you will see whether there are additional document requirements in the country you live in.

Generate your personal checklist by answering a maximum of 10 questions:

  • Your foreign documents may need to be legalised.
  • If your document was not drawn up in Dutch, English, French or German, you should have it translated by a sworn translator.
  • You may be asked to provide additional documents.
  • A Dutch nationality certificate is only issued in Dutch.

Step 2: Check the additional requirements/information

Depending on your country of residence, additional document requirements may apply. Below you can find out about the requirements in the United States, the American Virgin Islands, the Bahama's, the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico or the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Do you have the American nationality? Then you can show that you are legally residing in the United States by providing one of the following documents:

  • a copy of your valid American passport (if you were born in the US);
  • a certificate of naturalisation as a US citizen or proof of birth abroad, a so called Consular Report of Birth Abroad, CRBA (if you were not born in the US).

If you do not have valid US immigration documents, you must hold a ‘Certification of Non-existence of a Record of Naturalization’. You can request this document from US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

If you are living in the American Virgin Islands, the Bahama's, the Cayman Islands, Puerto Rico or the Turks and Caicos Islands:

  • a valid visa and supporting documents
