Applying for a Dutch nationality certificate if you live in the United States
If you are a Dutch national living in the United States, you can apply for a Dutch nationality certificate. You must provide a number of documents with your application. The documents you need depend on your personal situation.
You can use a Dutch nationality certificate to prove that you are a Dutch national. You may need to prove this if you move abroad or want to get married, or if you start a new job, such as a public administration position.
Retaining Dutch nationality
You can also apply for a Dutch nationality certificate if you want to retain your Dutch nationality. A certificate is cheaper than a passport and you do not need to apply in person. You can submit your application by email instead.

When you apply for a Dutch nationality certificate, it is important that you provide the right documents. So you should first fill in the personal checklist for you or your child. Then you’ll know what documents you need.

- Your foreign documents may need to be legalised.
- If your document was not drawn up in Dutch, English, French, German or Spanish, you should have it translated by a sworn translator.
- You may be asked to provide additional documents.
Step 2: Check the additional requirements/information.
Depending on your country of residence, additional document requirements may apply. Below you can find out about the requirements in the United States.

Do you have the American nationality? Then you can show that you are legally residing in the United States by providing one of the following documents:
- a copy of your valid American passport (if you were born in the US);
- a certificate of naturalisation as a US citizen or proof of birth abroad, a so called Consular Report of Birth Abroad, CRBA (if you were not born in the US).
If you do not have valid US immigration documents, you must hold a ‘Certification of Non-existence of a Record of Naturalization’. You can request this document from US Citizenship and Immigration Services.
