Is my driving licence valid in the United Kingdom?

Are you planning to drive in the United Kingdom? Check whether you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) besides your Dutch driving licence.

Validity of Dutch driving licences abroad

You can drive in all EU countries if you have a valid Dutch driving licence. Your driving licence is also valid in Liechtenstein, Norway, Iceland and Switzerland. Outside the EU you may need an International Driving Permit (IDP). You can buy one from the Royal Dutch Touring Club (ANWB). Their website also lists the countries that require an IDP. This site is in Dutch.

If you are going abroad for a longer period, different rules may apply. For more information visit

Applying for a new driving licence whilst living in the UK

It is not possible to renew or replace a lost or stolen Dutch driving licence in the Netherlands if you are living in the UK. You will have to submit an application to the DVLA. In order to do this you will have to obtain a confirmation from the Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer (RDW) stating that a driving licence was issued to you in the Netherlands.
