Renewing your driving licence in Italy?
If you live in Italy and your Dutch driving licence has expired, you cannot renew it. You must exchange your Dutch licence for an Italian licence.
Exchanging your driving licence
You can exchange your Dutch driving licence for an Italian licence at the Motorizzazione Civile (MC) in the district where you live. You will not need to retake your driving test. Each local MC has its own website. Check the website of the Motorizzazione Civile in Rome (information in Italian).
If your driving licence is expired of stolen, you will need a certificate of authenticity (information in Dutch). This certificate is issued by the Road Transport Agency (RDW). It shows whether your driving licence is listed in the Central Driving Licences Register. The certificate is in English.
Please note: in Italy you will need to have the certificate translated into Italian by a sworn translator. You do not need to legalise the certificate and the translation.
An "auto scuola" of the Automobile Club d'Italia (ACI, comparable to the ANWB in the Netherlands) can mediate (for a fee) to obtain a new driving license.
Driving licence lost or stolen?
If your Dutch driving licence has been lost or stolen you must apply for an Italian driving licence. You can do so at the Motorizzazione Civile (MC) in the district where you live. Each local MC has its own website. Check the website of the Motorizzazione Civile in Rome (information in Italian).
You can download a statement of loss (pdf, 75 kB; information in Dutch) and send it to the Road Transport Agency (RDW). This will prevent unauthorised use of your driving licence.
The Netherlands embassy in Rome doesn't mediate with renewing your driving licence or in obtaining a new driving licence in case the old one is missing or got stolen.
