Renewing your driving licence in Bulgaria?

If you live in Bulgaria and your Dutch driving licence has expired, you cannot renew it. You must exchange your Dutch licence for a Bulgarian licence.

Exchanging your driving licence

You can exchange your Dutch driving licence for a Bulgarian licence at the Traffice Police, Bulgarian Ministry of Interior (information in Bulgarian and English). You will not need to retake your driving test. An important condition for applying for a driving licence is that your old driving licence still has to be valid.

To apply for a Bulgarian licence you will have to submit the following documents:

  • application form
  • Bulgarian residence permit
  • medical test
  • declaration that your habitual residence is not in another EU member-country (standardised form)
  • your old valid driving licence and a copy of it
  • proof of payment

Driving licence lost or stolen?

If your Dutch driving licence has been lost or stolen you must apply for a Bulgarian driving licence. You can do so at the Traffice Police, Bulgarian Ministry of Interior (information in Bulgarian and English).

You can download a statement of loss (PDF, 75kb) (information in Dutch) and send it to the Road Transport Agency (RDW). This will prevent unauthorised use of your driving licence.
