Are you currently abroad or will you be travelling abroad soon? And is your Dutch residence permit about to expire? What arrangements you need to make depends on your nationality and your passport. It also depends on whether you are still in the Netherlands or already abroad.

Check if you need a visa

What kind of visa you need depends on whether you are still in the Netherlands or already abroad.

Apply for a return visa or an entry visa

I am still in the Netherlands

If you need a visa and you are still in the Netherlands:

  1. Have the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) extend your residence permit. This is possible if your residence permit will expire within 3 months.
  2. Apply for a return visa. You can use this visa when you to return to the Netherlands. Go to the IND website to make an appointment online to apply for a return visa.

I am already abroad

If you are abroad and your residence permit has expired, or you have lost your residence permit, you cannot apply for a return visa. You will need to apply for an entry visa in the country where you currently are.

Both visas allow you to return to the Netherlands if your residence permit has expired. The difference is:

  • you apply for a return visa with the IND, before you leave the Netherlands to go abroad
  • you apply for an entry visa abroad. Where you do this varies by country
