Victim of sexual violence or abuse abroad
Have you had an unwanted sexual experience abroad, such as sexual violence, rape or sexual harassment? You might not immediately think of seeking help, but it’s important to do so. On this page you can find out what to do and who to turn to.
What to do if you have been a victim of sexual violence or abuse
If you have been a victim of sexual violence abroad:
- Try and find a safe place.
- Report the incident to the local police. The Dutch embassy or consulate can advise you on what is important when lodging a criminal complaint. But it is always up to you to decide whether or not to lodge a criminal complaint. If you don’t report the crime until a later date, important evidence could be lost, such as forensic evidence.
- After you have lodged a criminal complaint, you will probably have to undergo a forensic examination. This is necessary for the criminal investigation and to check for STIs or pregnancy.
