What will happen to my luggage if I transit at a Dutch airport?

When you change planes at an airport in the Netherlands, your luggage is sometimes automatically transferred to your next flight. Sometimes you have to collect your luggage yourself and check it in for your next flight. Find out what applies to you.

What is your situation?

If you have 1 ticket to your final destination your airline will ensure that your luggage is automatically transferred to your next flight. Check with the airline you are flying with. If this is the case, you will collect your luggage in the baggage hall at your final destination. It will not be available to you at the Dutch airport.

If you have 2 separate tickets for your journey to your final destination, you will have to collect your luggage from the baggage carousel at the Dutch airport. You must then check it in again for your next flight.

Warning: When you collect your luggage you will go through passport control and leave the international transit zone. This is only possible if you have a Schengen visa for your transit through the Dutch airport. Or if you are allowed to travel to the Netherlands without a visa.

If you don’t know whether you need a visa when transiting at a Dutch airport, check whether you need a visa.

Ask your airline whether your luggage will be labelled for the final destination. If so, your luggage will automatically be transferred to your next flight.

If your baggage is not labelled for your final destination, you will have to collect it from the baggage hall at the Dutch airport and check it in again for your next flight.

Warning: When you collect your luggage you will go through passport control and leave the international transit zone. This is only possible if you have a Schengen visa for your transit through the Dutch airport. Or if you are allowed to travel to the Netherlands without a visa.
