What types of Dutch emergency travel documents are there?

If your Dutch passport or ID card has been lost or stolen and you need to travel, you can apply for an emergency travel document. There are 3 types of emergency travel documents. Which type you need depends on where and when you have to travel.

If you are abroad and your passport or ID card has been lost or stolen, you can apply for a laissez-passer at a Dutch embassy. However, you must be able to show that you cannot postpone your travel plans.

A laissez-passer is an emergency travel document that can be issued at short notice by the Dutch embassy. It is valid for a one-way trip to the Netherlands. The document has a blue cover. The biographical data page is filled out by hand by an embassy staff member, and the photo is glued in place. Once you are back in the Netherlands, hand in the laissez-passer to your municipality and apply for a new passport or ID card. If you are in a country that does not accept laissez-passers, or if you will travel through multiple countries, you can apply for a regular passport in an expedited procedure at a Dutch embassy.
