Giving notice of your intention to marry in the Netherlands if you live abroad

If you and your partner both live outside the Netherlands, and plan to marry in the Netherlands, you must give the municipality of The Hague notice of your intention to marry. You can then get married in any municipality in the Netherlands.

Attention: Please note: first check that you meet all the requirements for marrying in the Netherlands.

Giving notice of your intention to marry in the Netherlands if you both live abroad

To marry in the Netherlands you must first give notice of your intention to marry. If you and your partner both live outside the Netherlands, you must give notice to the municipality of The Hague, even if you want to marry in a different municipality. Give notice of your intention to marry at least 8 weeks before your marriage date. Don’t wait too long to do this. You will need to provide a number of original documents and this means the process may take longer than 8 weeks. Your notice is valid for 1 year. If you don’t get married within 1 year of giving notice, you will have to start the process again.

Costs for giving notice of intention to marry

Giving notice of your intention to marry via the municipality of The Hague is free. However, if you cancel or move your wedding, you may be charged a fee.

You and/or your partner live in the Netherlands

If one or both of you live in the Netherlands, give notice of your intention to marry to the Dutch municipality where you plan to marry.
