Which elections can I vote in while abroad?
If you are a Dutch national living outside the Netherlands and are registered as a Dutch voter abroad, you can vote in elections for the Dutch House of Representatives, the European Parliament and the electoral college for non-residents (which helps determine the Senate). You cannot vote in the elections for the municipal council, provincial council or water authority.
You can vote if you meet the following conditions:
- You have Dutch nationality.
- You are 18 years old or over.
- You live abroad and are not registered with a Dutch municipality.
- You are registered as a Dutch voter abroad.
- You have a valid Dutch identity document. This can be a Dutch passport or a Dutch ID card. Or an identity card from Bonaire, St Eustatius or Saba stating that you have Dutch nationality. Or an identity card from Aruba, Curaçao or St Maarten stating that you have Dutch nationality.
If you live in another EU country, you have 2 options for the elections for the European Parliament:
- You can vote for a Dutch candidate for the European Parliament. You must register as a Dutch voter abroad at the municipality of The Hague.
- Or you can vote for a candidate of the EU country you are living in. You must declare you wish to vote in that country. If you do so, you cannot vote for a Dutch candidate as well. EU countries exchange information regarding who is registered as a voter to prevent voting twice. Are you registered in another EU country? Then the municipality of The Hague must remove your registration as a voter abroad. You are then unable to vote for a Dutch candidate.
