Applying for a Dutch nationality certificate if you live in Belgium

If you are a dual Dutch national aged 18 or over living in Belgium, you cannot lose your Dutch nationality because you live in the EU. It therefore is not necessary to apply for a Dutch nationality certificate.

You can  apply for a Dutch nationality certificate only if you are a dual Dutch national aged 18 or over living outside the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao, St Maarten and the EU. And if the purpose of the application is to prevent the loss of your Dutch nationality.

When do I not lose my Dutch nationality?

You do not lose your Dutch nationality in the following cases:

  • You hold only Dutch nationality.
  • You hold another nationality in addition to Dutch nationality but live in the Netherlands, Aruba, Curaçao, St Maarten, or in the EU.

Proof of Dutch nationality

You can prove that you hold Dutch nationality using a Dutch passport or identity card. Or, you can use an extract from your municipality on which your nationality is stated (if it is possible to obtain such a document in your country).

Certificate needed for a purpose other than preventing the loss of Dutch nationality

Do you need a Dutch nationality certificate for a purpose other than preventing the loss of your Dutch nationality?
