Registering a death in the Netherlands

Would you like to report the death of a loved one or someone else? Usually the funeral director will declare the death, but you can also do this yourself. This should be done at the municipality where your loved one died.

This is how it works in your (future) place of residence

Your (future) place of residence falls under the Municipality of Leiden.

Register a death

Did someone die? Then the municipality where the person died registers the death. Subsequently, a 'permit to bury or cremate' is issued. That is the permission for burial or cremation.

The funeral director usually registers the death. Are you a surviving relative and do you want to file the declaration yourself? Call to make an appointment to come to the counter.
