Registering a civil partnership in the Netherlands

Do you want to form a civil partnership? If so, you must first notify the municipality. You must do this at least 2 weeks and a maximum of 1 year before you want to form the civil partnership.

The registration of a civil partnership is subject to a number of conditions (in Dutch), such as: 

  • you must be at least 18 years of age; 
  • you cannot enter into a civil partnership with someone who is already married or in a civil partnership
  • you cannot be related to one other, e.g. grandparent, grandchild, parent, child or sibling.

Forming a civil partnership

You must make a number of choices when planning and giving notice of a civil partnership. This includes choosing the type of ceremony and the venue. The costs depend on your wishes and the possibilities in the municipality of Maastricht.

Ceremony

The ceremony is the official part of forming a civil partnership. You have the following options:

  • no ceremony (free of charge);
  • eenvoudige ceremonie (standard ceremony);
  • uitgebreide ceremonie (enhanced ceremony) Monday-Friday;
  • uitgebreide ceremonie 24/7.

You can choose who performs your ceremony if you opt for an enhanced ceremony. The following options are available:

  • a municipal trouwambtenaar (wedding officiant);
  • a friend or family member.

If you choose one of the municipality's wedding officiants, the officiant will contact you a few weeks before the planned date to introduce themselves and find out more about you and your partner.

Venue for the ceremony

You can hold your civil partnership ceremony at various venues in the municipality of Maastricht. You have the following options:

  • one of the municipality's wedding venues;
  • a venue of your own choice.

Giving notice of an civil partnership

Reserve a date first

You must reserve a date for your civil partnership before you can give notice. Send an email to huwelijk@maastricht.nl or call +31 (0)43 350 4040 to reserve a date.

Give notice online

You must give notice in the municipality where you want to form your civil partnership. You will need your own, your partner's and your witnesses' personal details. The submission deadline is 2 weeks before the registration date. You can submit the details online or provide them in person at the town hall. 

You can give notice using your DigiD or without using your DigiD.

You can choose from various packages if you wish to form a civil partnership in the municipality of Maastricht.
