Paying the sewage charge

You pay a sewage charge (rioolheffing) for your wastewater and for rainwater that ends up in the sewer. The sewage charge is part of the municipal taxes and is collected by the municipality, which uses that money to pay for maintenance and replacement of the sewers. Some municipalities also call the sewage charge sewage tax (rioolbelasting).

This is how it works in your (future) place of residence

Your (future) place of residence falls under the Municipality of Steenwijkerland.

Municipality of Steenwijkerland: Paying the sewage charge

Please note: you only have to pay  rioolheffing (sewage charge) if you live in the Netherlands and are registered with a municipality.

The municipality is responsible for the construction, maintenance and replacement of the sewage system. But also for the maintenance of ditches, ditches, waterways and the discharge of excess water (drainage). You pay sewage charges for this.

Calculation of sewage charges

The sewerage charge consists of a basic rate and a wastewater rate. You also pay the basic rate if your home or business building is not connected to the municipal sewer system. Is your home or business building connected to the sewer system? Then you pay the basic rate and the waste water rate.

If several WOZ objects (WOZ= waardering onroerende zaken = valuation of real estate) together have only 1 connection, each WOZ object is assessed separately.

Are you the owner and resident/user? Then you pay the costs for ownership and for use. Are you a tenant? Then you only pay the costs for use.

Relocation or sale

  • Are you the owner of a plot on 1 January? You pay the owner's part of the sewage charge for the entire year. The civil-law notary settles this part between the buyer and you when selling your property.
  • Will you continue to live in Steenwijkerland? Then the user portion of the sewage charge remains the same for you. The attack does not change. Except if you are going to live with someone who already pays sewage charges.
  • Are you moving to another municipality? Then you pay the user portion of the sewage charge to the municipality of Steenwijkerland up to and including the month in which you move.

For more information, see the municipality's website. Or contact the municipality.
