Notifying the municipality when you move home

Are you moving home within the Netherlands? If so, notify the new municipality where you are going to live of your move. The new municipality will register you at your new address. You do not need to deregister from your old municipality.

The move can be notified by:

  • anyone aged 16 or older;
  • cohabiting spouses / civil partners on behalf of each other;
  • the parent, guardian or caregiver on behalf of minor children;
  • parents on behalf of adult children living with them;
  • adult children on behalf of parents living with them;
  • the conservator on behalf of a person placed under a conservatorship;
  • an authorised representative.

You must notify the new municipality where you are going to live that you are moving home. You must inform it of your new address no later than 4 weeks before the moving date, or within 5 days after the moving date.

Moving home

You must also report this if you continue to live in the same municipality.

Are you going to live together? When you move in with someone else, you must have written permission. You take this permission with you when you report the move.

You can indicate a move on behalf of:

  • yourself, if you are 16 years or older;
  • by a parent, guardian or carer for minor children;
  • cohabiting spouses / registered partners for each other;
  • cohabiting parents and adult children for each other;
  • the trustee for a person placed under guardianship;
  • an adult who has been authorized to do so in writing.

If you do not comply with the declaration obligation, the municipality can impose a fine on you.

  •  valid proof of identity;
  • a copy of your purchase or rental contract;
  • if you are going to live with someone: written permission from the main occupant and a copy of a valid proof of identity of the main occupant.

Arrangements in writing

Making arrangements at the counter
You can report your move to Public Affairs. Bring the following documents with you: Make an online appointment for this

  • a valid proof of identity;
  • a copy of your purchase or rental contract;
  • if you are going to live with someone: written permission from the main occupant and a copy of a valid proof of identity of the main occupant.

Emigrate
You are obliged to submit a written declaration of your departure to your municipality of residence within 5 days before your departure from the Netherlands. The declaration must state both the old address and the new country of residence and the first address of residence in that country.

It is free to notify your move.

Notify the municipality where you will be living within 5 days of moving. You can submit the relocation declaration at the earliest 4 weeks before your move. If you move to another municipality, you can report the change to the new municipality of residence.
