Applying for study benefit for students with a disability

Do you receive government financial support for your tertiary or secondary education? Are you unable to earn extra income due to a chronic illness or disability? Then you may be eligible for study benefit (studietoeslag) from your municipality.

In all cases, the following conditions must be met to be eligible to receive study benefit:

  • you receive student finance (studiefinanciering) as a tertiary student or a basic allowance (basistoelage) for secondary students;
  • you cannot earn extra income alongside your studies because of your disability.
  • you are not entitled to the Wajong benefit

Ask your municipality about all the conditions that apply.

You can apply for study benefit at the municipality where you live, regardless of where you are studying.

Please note: you can apply for a studietoeslag (study benefit) only if you live in the Netherlands and are registered with a municipality.

You are eligible for the study allowance if you meet the following conditions:

  • You are structurally unable to earn income in addition to your studies as a result of an illness or disability.
  • You receive student finance under the Student Finance Act 2000, not being the lifelong learning loan, or you receive an allowance under Chapter 4 of the Education Contribution and School Expenses Allowance Act (WTOS) and
  • You are not entitled to benefits under the Disability Benefits Act for Young Disabled Persons (Wajong);
  • You can only qualify for the individual study allowance once. If the study is interrupted or terminated, the right to further allowance will lapse. The supplement cannot be granted retroactively (prior to the date of application).

You must upload/attach the following attachments to the application form:

  • A copy of a valid identity document (passport, identity card or verblijfsvergunning (residence permit) (not a driving licence).
  • A letter confirming the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs – DUO (education implementation service) grant of your student finance. That can be based on either the WSF or the WTOS.
  • A copy of a bank statement specifying the name of the account and the account number into which the allowance will be deposited.
  • A copy of a recent medical report.

You must reapply for study benefit for each new school year.

Study benefit amounts

The amount of the study benefit depends on your age. These are the statutory amounts per month:

  • 21 years of age and over: € 300.00;
  • 20 years of age: € 240.00;
  • 19 years of age: € 180.00;
  • 18 years of age: € 150.00;
  • 17 years of age: € 118.50;
  • 16 years of age: € 103.50;
  • 15 years of age: € 90.00.

You will receive a letter informing you of the outcome within 8 weeks of your application. What happens if the application is incomplete or more time is needed for the investigation? Processing may take longer than 8 weeks in such cases.
