Applying for a new passport or renewing your old one in the Netherlands

Do you want to apply for a new passport or renew your old one? The application process depends on where you hold citizenship and where you live.

  • Do you hold Dutch citizenship? Then you can apply or renew at your municipality. 
  • Do you hold Dutch citizenship, but have no fixed place of residence? Then you can contact a Dutch border municipality to apply for a new passport or to renew your old one.
  • Do you not hold Dutch citizenship? Visit your own embassy or consulate for a passport. 
  • Do you live in the Netherlands on a valid residence permit? Are you unable to get a passport from your country of origin? Then you can apply for a vreemdelingenpaspoort (alien passport) at your municipality. 
  • Do you live in the Netherlands as an erkend vluchteling (recognised refugee)? Then you can apply for a vluchtelingenpaspoort (refugee passport) at your municipality.

Applying for a new passport or renewing your old one

Note. You can only apply for or renew a passport if you live in the Netherlands and are registered with a municipality.

Do you hold Dutch citizenship, but have no fixed place of residence? If so, you can contact a Dutch border municipality to apply for a new passport or to renew your old one.

You apply for a passport in person at the municipality where you live. Contact us to make an appointment: +31 599 320 220.

  • Children up to the age of 18: € 57.34

You pay a fee for this service. For more information, contact the municipality [contactgegevens].

After about a week, you will collect the passport from the municipality yourself. This also applies to children up to 18 years old. You will receive more information on how to collect your passport when you apply.

You will have 3 months to collect your new passport.

In need of passport more quickly?

  • If you need your passport quickly, apply for an emergency passport. If you make your passport application before 2pm, you can collect it the next working day. Do allow for a delay if you no longer possess your old passport
  • Should you need the passport as early as today, contact the Marechaussee (Royal Netherlands Military Constabulary) for an emergency passport

Valid for how long?

  • For adults, a passport is valid for 10 years
  • A passport for children up to 18 years is valid for 5 years
