Applying for an allowance for own contribution to childcare costs in the Netherlands

Do you have a lower income and do you receive childcare benefit (kinderopvangtoeslag)? Then you can apply for an extra allowance for your own contribution to the costs of childcare. You can apply for this at your municipality.

Municipality of Apeldoorn: Applying for an allowance for own contribution to childcare costs

Do your children attend childcare but you do not work? Then you can sometimes get a childcare allowance from the municipality.

You can only receive compensation if:

  • One of the following situations applies to you:
  • You have income from work. And you still have a social assistance benefit.
  • You receive social assistance benefit. You are also cooperating to get back to work.
  • You are younger than 18. You are attending school or training. And you are entitled to social assistance benefit.
  • You are registered at a school or educational institution. You have no income from work.
  • You have a socio-medical indication (SMI). Additional conditions apply in your situation.
  • Your child attends a day-care centre, after-school care or a guest parent. You cannot get an allowance for other forms of childcare. Other forms include playgroup, between-school care or babysitting by someone you know.
  • The childcare centre is listed in the National Childcare Register (LRK).

Do you have a socio-medical indication (SMI)?

Then you can only receive an allowance if you also meet these conditions:

  • Your net income per month is less than 125% of the social assistance standard in your situation. It concerns your family's total net income.
  • You have received a socio-medical indication from the Centre for Youth and Family (CJG). The CJG may invite you for an indication interview.

You will be reimbursed the maximum amounts per hour set by the central government. You can read more about this under the heading "How high is the childcare allowance?". You will receive the allowance for a maximum of 30 hours per week for a maximum of 3 months. If necessary, an extension of 3 months is possible.
