Applying for an allowance for own contribution to childcare costs in the Netherlands

Do you have a lower income and do you receive childcare benefit (kinderopvangtoeslag)? Then you can apply for an extra allowance for your own contribution to the costs of childcare. You can apply for this at your municipality.

Applying for an allowance for own contribution to childcare costs in the Netherlands

Please note: you can apply for the compensation for personal contribution to kinderopvangtoeslag (childcare allowance) only if you live in the Netherlands and are registered with a municipality.

You are eligible for compensation if one of the following situations applies to you and your partner:

  • You receive bijstandsuitkering (social welfare benefits) and are following a reintegration programme to find work.
  • You receive social welfare benefits and are following a mandatory inburgering (civic integration) programme with an approved institution.
  • You work and receive supplementary social welfare benefits.
  • You are studying and earn the minimum wage.

You must meet the following conditions:

  • You receive childcare allowance from the Belastingdienst (Tax and Customs Administration).
  • You, your partner and your child are registered with the municipality of Amsterdam.

You can apply for the compensation for the personal contribution to childcare allowance either online or by telephone.

Online

Print the application form, fill it in and send it by post to the City Office in your district. You can also hand in the form at your City Office.

By telephone

You can request the application form by telephone, and it will be sent to your home. Please call 020 252 6000 Send the completed form by post to City Office in your district. You can also hand in the form at your City Office.

Compensation amount

The additional compensation from the municipality is 4% of the hourly rate of the childcare. Visit our Dutch website for the amounts.

Good to know:

  • Some childcare organisations have a higher rate. You do not receive compensation in respect of the difference.
  • There is also a maximum number of hours in respect of which you can apply for the compensation. That number is 230 hours per month per child.

The municipality will send you a letter within 8 weeks informing you whether you are entitled to the compensation for the personal contribution to childcare allowance. That letter will also state how long you will receive the contribution.
