In the future, logging in using your Dutch ID card or driving licence will allow you to access extra sensitive personal data. This gives your data an extra layer of protection. At the moment, this way of logging in is not mandatory.
Attention: If you live abroad you cannot apply for a driving licence with login function. A driving licence with login function is only issued in person at a municipal counter in the Netherlands.
What you need to log in
To log in using DigiD and your ID card, you need the following:
- Your ID card (issued on or after 4 January 2021)
- The PIN for your ID card (sent to you by post)
- An activated DigiD app
You will need to activate your ID card’s DigiD login function before you can log in.
You’ll also need:
- An Android phone or tablet with an NFC reader (OS 7.0 or higher)
- An iPhone 7 or later with an NFC reader (iOS 13.2 or later)
How to log in using your ID
- Go to the DigiD login screen on your computer. Under ‘How would you like to log in?’ select ‘Using my identity card’.
- Open the DigiD app on your phone or tablet and enter your PIN.
- Click on 'Need verification code?'
- Enter in on your computer the verification code that appears in the DigiD app.
- Scan the QR code on your computer screen in the DigiD app.
- Hold your ID against the back of your phone or tablet.
- Enter the personal PIN for your ID.
- Hold your ID against the back of your phone or tablet again.
- You are now logged in.
