The main reason for Prof. Balkenende’s visit to Singapore is his presence as Guest of Honour at the Official Opening of the 100-year anniversary celebrations of HSL at the National Museum of Singapore on Thursday, 13 February 2020. Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, will also be present as Guest of Honour.
During his visit, Prof. Balkenende will meet with several high level officials. Further events have been programmed in close cooperation with HSL, ADB-DutchCham, the Centre for Governance, Institutions and Organisations, National University of Singapore Business School and EuroCham.
On Wednesday, 12 February 2020, Prof. Balkenende will co-chair a Round Table with Dutch Sustainable Growth Coalition (DSGC) members in Singapore. Mirroring the DSGC in the Netherlands, invitees to the round table are Singapore and Asia Pacific region senior leadership representatives of the DSGC members AkzoNobel, DSM, Friesland Campina, Heineken, KLM, Philips, Shell and Unilever. The objective of the meeting is to discuss the aim of DSGC – driving sustainable growth by combining economic profitability with environmental and social progress, and in that way contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – in the context of the Asia Pacific region, and to explore opportunities for collaboration among the members and with other companies active in the region.
Collaboration discussions between Singapore and the Netherlands regarding agriculture expertise, products and technology will take place during a luncheon with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), SG Innovate, and Guest of Honour Dr. Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State in the Ministry of Health and Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.
On the same day Prof. Balkenende will also give a Lecture at the National University of Singapore Business School on the subject ‘Stakeholder Capitalism in the New Economy’ followed by a Public Sustainability Symposium organized by HSL and ADB-DutchCham. The program will start with a keynote by Prof. Balkenende, followed by three short speeches on sustainability by ABN AMRO, Friesland Campina and KLM.
On Thursday, 13 February 2020, Prof. Balkenende will give a Guest Lesson on Sustainability and Innovation for Group 8 from HSL and attend meetings with high-level Singapore government officials and companies. Prof. Balkenende will also pay a courtesy call to Singapore Prime Minister Mr. Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana. Together with Singapore’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Prof. Balkenende will speak at the Official Opening of HSL’s 100-year anniversary which will be followed by the HSL100 Vernissage at the National Museum of Singapore.
Prof. Balkenende’s visit to Singapore will be concluded with an EuroCham C-suite Roundtable Dinner on Sustainable Growth.
