Famous Dutch authors at UK Literature Festivals this October
The New Dutch Writing campaign in the UK is really kicking off this October! A major event will be held in the British Library in London on Saturday 12 October. During this "day of refreshingly open cultural exchange", six famous Dutch writers will make an appearance: Joris Luyendijk, Naema Tahir, Herman Koch, Esther Gerritsen, Bart van Es and Jeroen Olyslaegers. Simon Schama - a leading historian on Dutch history and culture - will give a keynote speech at this event. Tickets are on sale now.

The above is just one of the many New Dutch Writing events this months! Some other events that are open to the public:
- 9 October: Award-winning author Daniel Hahn interviews Dutch writers Bregje Hofstede and Eva Meijer at the National Centre for Writing in Norwich. (Both Hofstede and Meijer are taking up residence at the National Centre for Writing in October.)

- 9 October: BBC Radio 3 looks at the way Dutch writers are addressing history and contemporary life. Radio presenter Laurence Scott speaks with Rodaan Al Galidi, Eva Meijer, Onno Blom, Herman Koch and Toon Tellegen. Tune in to BBC Radio 3 on 9 October at 10pm. After the broadcast, the programme Modern Dutch Writing will be available on the BBC website.
- 11 October: Herman Koch at Cheltenham Literature Festival. The widely acclaimed bestselling author will be interviewed between 4:00 pm and and 5:15 pm.

That same day, from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Koch - whose novel The Ditch was recently launched in the UK - will discuss the appeal of creating dark, toxic characters with British crime writers Louise Candlish and Sam Baker.

- 13 October: Both Bart van Es and Herman Koch make an appearance at Durham Book Festival.
Bart van Es, author of The Cut Out Girl, winner of the 2018 Costa Book of the Year, speaks in Durham Town Hall from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Sunday 13 October. Get tickets here.
Herman Koch, author of bestseller The Dinner, will be in conversation with German writer Dagmar Leupold from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm, also in Durham Town Hall. Get tickets here.
New Dutch Writing campaign runs for a year and a half
Many more events to promote translated Dutch literature will take place in the UK throughout 2019 and 2020. The New Dutch Writing Campaign is an initiative of the Dutch Literature Fund.
