KLM informs British press on 100th anniversary

Journalists from various British and Irish travel and transportation publications attended a press conference by KLM in the Residency of Dutch Ambassador to the UK Simon Smits on 2 October. They gathered on the occasion of 100 years KLM – Royal Dutch Airlines. The company’s first ever commercial flight was from London to Amsterdam and at that time there were a number of British journalists on board. Hence, the decision to brief British journalists about KLM’s 100th anniversary at the Dutch Residency in London.

'KLM connects 16 UK regions with the world'

The journalists had plenty of questions for KLM CEO Pieter Elbers and General Manager for Air France - KLM in the UK & Ireland, Benedicte Duval. “Many communities in the UK depend on KLM for their connectivity with the world, via Amsterdam”, Elbers said when asked about KLM’s numerous regional services in the UK. He explained that when people want to fly from UK regions like Cardiff, Leeds or Humberside to far away destinations such as Osaka or Sao Paolo “KLM is your best choice”, pointing out that competitors don’t have flights from those regions to London and beyond.

KLM’s Fly Responsibly campaign

Among many other topics, Mr Elbers and Ms Duval also spoke about the KLM’s Fly Responsibly campaign launched earlier this year and the companies biofuel ambitions. Elbers said: “As with efforts to improve safety standards across the industry, sustainability is not something to compete on within the aviation industry; it's something we all need to collaborate on.”

The Dutch Embassy in the UK had the pleasure of hosting KLM and the press for this event. The big celebration of KLM’s centenary will take place in Amsterdam, on 7 October. It will be followed by a month of celebrations around the globe.
