Winning tender for Dutch pavilion at EXPO 2020 Dubai announced

A consortium of Dutch and international companies has been selected to design and build the Dutch pavilion at EXPO 2020 Dubai. The winning consortium comprises Expomobilia, V8 Architects, Kossmann.dejong and Witteveen+Bos. Together, they have a wealth of experience and a strong network in Dubai. They also combine the necessary know-how in the fields of pavilion construction and pavilion architecture, interactive visitor experiences, circularity and sustainable construction.

The Netherlands and the consortium partners will deliver a distinctive pavilion that stands out for its circularity and use of innovative, sustainable technologies. The partners will work in close cooperation with startups. The pavilion will in effect be a circular climate installation offering an intense sensory experience to both private and corporate visitors. The entire construction will have an architectural presence that complements the circumstances in Dubai. The pavilion will thus seamlessly match the Netherlands’ chosen theme of ‘Uniting water, energy & food’. The design will be presented in December 2018.

Eleven proposals

The winning consortium was selected following a European public procurement process. The Netherlands’ contracting authority is the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (, acting on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Eleven proposals were received and assessed by an expert committee that included representatives of the Central Government Real Estate Agency and specialists from the construction and communications industries. The proposals were judged on their sustainability and circularity by Ecofys-Navigant, Wim Berns Management & Advies and Turner & Townsend. In addition to the award of the contract, a fee will be paid for the other valid tenders.

Management and sponsoring

The winning consortium will be responsible for the maintenance and finishing of the pavilion as well as for its design and construction. One or more calls for tenders for the management of the pavilion will be held before the end of first quarter 2019. Opportunities for sponsors will be published soon.
