Production error found in an estimated 5,000 travel documents issued between April and June 2018
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has discovered a production error in an estimated 5,000 travel documents (passports and identity cards) produced between April 1, 2018, and June 30, 2018.
Due to this production error, the chip in passports and travel documents does not always work. This has no serious consequences.
Travelers with such a document could experience delays when using electronic border controls, which may take extra time. These travelers may have to turn to the regular border control, but will still be able to travel.
Of the estimated 5,000 travel documents in which this error occurred, an estimated 150 were issued to non-resident Dutch citizens.
Checking travel documents is possible in two ways:
- With the free App "BZK-ID" for Android phones with an NFC Reader. This app can be downloaded in Google Playstore from July 12, 2018.
- Have the document checked at the municipality or at a Dutch embassy.
Dutch citizens abroad who have questions about their travel documents can contact the 24/7 BZ contact center on +31 247 247 247.
If you have any questions about possible compensation for costs made in relation to the replacement of your travel document, please send an email to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
