Transit visa requirement for Cubans traveling via the Netherlands
The Minister of Foreign Affairs has decided to introduce a transit visa requirement for Cubans traveling via the Netherlands to a destination outside of the Schengen area. This new measure will take effect starting on January 29th, 2018.
A transit visa is a visa that allows a traveler to make a layover at a Dutch airport when traveling to a destination outside the Schengen area. The visa (also called Visa-A) does not give the traveler access to enter the Netherlands or any other Schengen country. Therefore, the traveler is not allowed to leave the airport.
The reason for this new measure is the sharp increase in recent months of the number of Cubans who, while making a layover in the Netherlands on their way to their final destination outside of the Schengen area, broke away at Schiphol Airport to apply for asylum.
This new compulsory transit visa will allow Dutch authorities to better evaluate the travel intentions of visa applicants.
