Ban on plastic carrier bags in Kenya

The ban on plastic carrier bags in Kenya came into effect on 28 August 2017. All plastic bags (regardless of colour, thickness, size and purpose) are banned. The NEMA (National Environment Management Authority) is responsible for enforcing the new law, and is the only authority to issue warnings or penalties in case of non-compliance. Non-compliance is already in order in case one gets caught with a plastic bag in the car. After a first warning, a second offence can lead to a hefty fine or a jail sentence.
