Year of the Orange Culture

Festival for Dutch and Flemish Culture in Slovakia

For twenty years, the Department of Dutch Studies at the Philosophical Faculty of Comenius University has been actively involved in promoting Dutch culture and Dutch language education in Slovakia. The year 2016 is a very special year, since we will be celebrating the 20th birthday of the Dutch language programme. Furthermore, both the Netherlands and Slovakia will be holding the Presidency of the European Council during this year. These events act as a bridge and they present an ideal occasion to draw attention to the Dutch language, Dutch culture and the Flemish culture in Slovakia.

We, the Dutch linguists, therefore would like to take the initiative to instigate several important activities in the cultural domain. Projects that will present Dutch and Flemish culture in Slovakia as one project. The aim of this project is to reach a broad Slovak public. Each month we will present several cultural, linguistic and literary activities, as well as some supplementary events.

The whole project will be instigated under the auspices of H.E.. Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Slovakia and the Dean of the Philosophical Faculty of Comenius University. Joint organisers of the Year of Orange Culture are the Department of Dutch Language at the Faculty, as well as the Flemish representation to the Slovak Republic. The most important partners of this project are  the Dutch Language Union and the cultural ‘Orde van den Prince’ organisation.

Examples of other planned events are a presentation of the Dutch translations of some Slovak authors, as well as an interactive theatre play on Dutch and Flemish poetry by Fast Forward. Furthermore, there will be a performance by the Utrecht Student Chorus/Ochestra, a cycling day in Bratislava and an ‘orange day’ at the Faculty.
