Official launch of Netherlands Presidency of the Council of the European Union

Today sees the official launch of the Netherlands Presidency of the Council of the European Union, with the entire European Commission visiting Amsterdam.

European Commission visits Amsterdam

The Commissioners will travel by boat along the city’s canals to the National Maritime Museum and the historic naval dockyard, where all informal ministerial and high-level meetings will be held during the Netherlands Presidency. There, the Commissioners will meet Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte and the other members of the Dutch government. The Commission’s arrival, the official greetings and the press conference will be broadcast live.

Bilateral meeting with President Juncker

After the meeting Mr Rutte and the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker will then meet in the Europe Building. A press conference will be held around 11.00. At that time, the other members of the government and European Commission will be discussing issues such as employment and growth, climate change and terrorism.

Meeting with King and Queen

In the afternoon, Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima will receive the Commissioners at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. The visit will close with the Commissioners meeting members of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
