Registering a stillborn baby in the Netherlands

A stillbirth is registered with the municipality in which the child was born. The municipality then issues a birth certificate (geboorteakte) for a stillbirth. It does not matter how long the pregnancy lasted.

Municipality of Westerwolde: Registering a stillborn baby

Registering a stillborn child may be done by:

  • Its father or female partner of a birth mother
  • Its mother
  • A hospital employee
  • The funeral director
  • Other people who know about the death

BRP registration

You can register your stillborn child in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP) if you live or will be living in the Netherlands. 

The death registration must be done before the burial or cremation takes place.
