Registering a civil partnership in the Netherlands
Do you want to form a civil partnership? If so, you must first notify the municipality. You must do this at least 2 weeks and a maximum of 1 year before you want to form the civil partnership.
The registration of a civil partnership is subject to a number of conditions (in Dutch), such as:
- you must be at least 18 years of age;
- you cannot enter into a civil partnership with someone who is already married or in a civil partnership
- you cannot be related to one other, e.g. grandparent, grandchild, parent, child or sibling.

Civil partnership, notification
The municipality checks whether you may enter into a civil partnership. Do you get permission? Then you can enter into a civil partnership.
Do you not live in the Netherlands? But do you want to enter into a civil partnership in the Netherlands? Read the information on the page getting married in the Netherlands if you live abroad.
The conditions for a civil partnership are:
- You are 18 years or older. Are you younger than 18 years old? Then your parents or the court must give permission. If you have a child or are pregnant, you may enter into a civil partnership from the age of 16.
- You are not married and are not registered as a partner.
- If you are under guardianship, you need permission from the curator or subdistrict court judge.
- One of the two partners must be a Dutch national or live in the Netherlands.
- You and your partner are not directly related to each other. (No parent or child, grandparent or grandchild, sibling, half-brother or half-sister and cousin).
When reporting a partnership, we ask for:
- Valid proof of identity
- Details of the witnesses
Were you born abroad? Then we also ask for:
- Birth certificate
- Proof of being unmarried

Reporting a civil partnership is free.
A partnership notification is valid for 1 year. There must be at least 2 weeks between the notification and your partnership.
