Registering a civil partnership in the Netherlands

Do you want to form a civil partnership? If so, you must first notify the municipality. You must do this at least 2 weeks and a maximum of 1 year before you want to form the civil partnership.

The registration of a civil partnership is subject to a number of conditions (in Dutch), such as: 

  • you must be at least 18 years of age; 
  • you cannot enter into a civil partnership with someone who is already married or in a civil partnership
  • you cannot be related to one other, e.g. grandparent, grandchild, parent, child or sibling.

Registering a civil partnership in the Netherlands

When planning and registering your registered partnership, you make a number of choices. In any case, this concerns the ceremony and the location. The costs depend on your wishes and the possibilities in the municipality of Midden-Drenthe.

Ceremony

The ceremony is the official part of your registered partnership. You can choose from:

  • no ceremony (free)
  • shortened ceremony
  • elaborate ceremony.

If you opt for an extensive ceremony, you can choose who leads the ceremony. You can choose from:

  • marriage registrar of the municipality;
  • family member or acquaintance who has already been appointed as Civil Registrar.

Do you choose a wedding registrar from the municipality? A wedding registrar from the municipality of Midden-Drenthe will then contact you a few weeks before the planned date to get acquainted.

Would you like a family member or acquaintance to become your temporary officiant? Then you must contact the municipality yourself.

Ceremony location

You can hold the ceremony for your registered partnership in various places in the municipality of Midden-Drenthe. You can choose:

  • the town hall in Beilen
  • its own location

Registering an intended civil partnership

You register your intended civil partnership with the municipality in which you wish to enter the civil partnership. Provide the details of yourself, your partner and your witnesses. This can be done up to 2 weeks before the ceremony date. You can do it online or at the town hall.

If you both do not live in the Netherlands, you must declare your partnership in the municipality of The Hague. You can find more information when reporting a marriage for Dutch people living abroad.

What does it cost

  • Shortened ceremony on Monday to Thursday after 10:00 am: € 121.40
  • Monday to Friday at the town hall: €499
  • Saturday and outside office hours at the town hall: € 939
  • Monday to Saturday at a location of your choice: €351
  • Monday morning at 9:00 and 9:30: free
