Paying the waste collection charge

You must pay the waste collection charge (afvalstoffenheffing) for the collection and processing of your household waste. The waste collection charge is part of the municipal taxes (gemeentelijke belastingen) and is billed by your municipality.

Municipalities calculate the amount of the waste collection charge in different ways. Some municipalities calculate the amount of the waste collection charge based of the size of your household. The larger your household, the more you pay. Other municipalities calculate the charge based on the amount of waste collected.

The waste collection charge is included in the municipal tax bill. This is usually sent out in the first 2 weeks of February.

Apply for an exemption on paying municipal taxes

Are you unable to pay your municipal taxes? Then ask your municipality for an exemption. You can be granted an exemption from paying part of the taxes, or all of the taxes. The municipality decides for which taxes you can be exempt from paying. It also determines whether you are eligible for an exemption.

Here is some information from your municipality.

Waste disposal charges

Please note. You only pay afvalstoffenheffing (waste disposal charges) if you live in the Netherlands and are registered with a municipality.

You pay tax for waste in the following ways:

  • with the green and red garbage bag for residual waste;
  • with the orange plastic+ bag for plastic, can and pack;
  • if you use an underground residual waste container;
  • at the recycling centers for certain types of bulky waste;
  • in certain cases for the collection of bulky waste at home.

How much you pay depends on the number of times you dispose of waste or have it collected. Alternatively, it may depend on the number of kilograms of waste. The more waste that you dispose of or the more often you dispose of it, the more you pay.

Charges

You pay for each time you dispose of waste. The following rates apply:

  • groene afvalzak: € 1,09 apiece;
  • rode afvalzak: € 0,69 apiece;
  • plastic+ zak: € 0,05 apiece;
  • gebruik ondergrondse container: € 1,09 each time.

Bulky waste

When your bulky waste is collected from your home:

  • reusable bulky waste (e.g. bulky garden waste, electrical appliances, large metal): 1st time free, 2nd time € 29,50;
  • other bulky waste (e.g. broken furniture):1st time free, 2nd time € 29,50 each time.

Bringing bulky waste to the recycling center yourself:

  • Do you have a waste pass? Then you can dispose of 200 kilos per household each year for free. Everything above that costs € 0,22 cents per kilo.
  • Don't have a waste pass? Then you cannot go to the recycling center. Would you like to request a waste pass? Contact Dar ('Waste Cleaning Service'): call +31 24 371 60 00.

You can find the recycling center at Kanaalstraat 104 in Nijmegen.
